9 Wonderful CBD Oil Benefits And Uses

Cannabidiol or CBD is one of the phytocannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. This compound occurs naturally and can be extracted from the flower of the cannabis plants. After the cannabis plant has been dried, it will go through a process called extraction. The extracted cannabidiol can then be inhaled, ingested, taken sublingually, or applied directly to the skin.

The popularity of CBD has skyrocketed in recent years because of its myriad of therapeutic benefits. This compound has been proven effective in alleviating the symptoms of a number of neurological conditions, certain mental disorders, some autoimmune diseases, certain types of cancer, and more.

Its therapeutic effects are still being tested by scientists and doctors in many countries and the cannabis plant still remains controversial, but many patients and parents of children suffering from debilitating health conditions have used CBD and swear by its efficacy.

But when it comes to CBD, there is always the misconception that it can get you "high." So, let's clarify this.

As mentioned before, CBD is one of the many phytocannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. One of these phytocannabinoids is the controversial tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the compound which gives marijuana its psychotropic or "euphoric" effects. CBD oil is extracted mainly from the industrial hemp plant which has high amounts of CBD and trace amounts of THC (< 0.3%).

THC, on the other hand, are found in large amounts in the marijuana plant (as much as 5%-35%). Since CBD oil extracted from hemp contains small amounts of THC, you will not experience any "high" or any negative mind-altering effects.

CBD Oil For Epilepsy

June 25, 2018 was a historic day for patients suffering from certain types of epilepsy, as well as people who advocate the legalization of cannabidiol as a medical treatment. This was the day when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration finally approved Epidiolex ® as a Schedule V drug. Epidiolex ® is a cannabidiol medication that is being used to treat children who have Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS) or Dravet syndrome.

Even before the approval of Epidiolex ®, people who suffer from epilepsy and their parents/caregivers have turned to CBD oil as a last resort after finding that they have not responded well to traditional anticonvulsants

Many patients and their caregivers found that CBD oil can help reduce the number of epileptic seizures -- despite the questions about its legality and safety. (It does not, however, eliminate epilepsy altogether). CBD also improves the patient's alertness, mood, motor skills, and sleep.

Since it eliminates the patient's dependence on antiepileptic drugs, CBD also helps reduce or eliminate the drugs' adverse effects.

The high price of Epidiolex ® can be prohibitive for many patients and parents of children who suffer from these two rare types of epilepsy. That's why many patients have turned to the internet to purchase CBD oil or choose to travel to other states where it is legal to buy CBD oil.

But how does it work? CBD reduces the number of epileptic seizures by mimicking endocannabinoid activity and increasing the body’s endocannabinoid levels. CBD oil for epilepsy is usually available as a tincture and taken sublingually. Other patients consume it through vaping or by ingesting it in the form of oral concentrates or capsules.

CBD Oil For Anxiety

Problems, whether real or perceived, are parts of life. But for some people, worries, stressors, and traumas can pile up and affect one's quality of life. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, approximately 40 million American adults suffer from a type of anxiety disorder. The traditional route is to treat severe anxiety with the help of psychotherapy and/or proper medication.

But for many people, psychotherapy and medications are either ineffective or sometimes out of reach, leading them to seek other alternative and non-traditional treatments, such as CBD oil. People with anxiety disorders have reported that they experienced bliss and a sense of calm after using CBD oil. Other users also reported that their mood and focus also improved after taking cannabidiol.

But so far, only small-scale experiments have been conducted to determine the effectivity of CBD oil in soothing anxiety. In reports and studies published in Neurotherapeutics (2015) and Neuropsychopharmacology (2011), CBD oil has shown some promise in treating some anxiety disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

But the results have been mixed. In a study published in 2018 in the Journal of Psychopharmacology and in 2017 in the Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research, researchers found that CBD failed to lower the subjects' anxiety levels.

CBD Oil For Depression

Depression is marked by a deep sadness or overall lack of interest in activities the person usually found pleasurable prior to the depressive episode. People suffering from depression also experience changes in appetite, weight loss, sleep issues, fatigue, and recurrent thoughts of death. This episode can last for at least two weeks or more.

Depression is traditionally treated with the help of psychotherapy and medications called antidepressants. But like sufferers of anxiety disorders, people suffering from depression have turned to CBD oil as an alternative treatment. CBD oil, however, does not magically cure depression and only alleviates it.

To understand how CBD oil helps in alleviating depression, we need to understand what causes depression. Depression has many possible causes, and these include a genetic predisposition toward this mood disorder, a myriad of health problems, the brain's malfunctioning mood regulation, trauma, and stressful events. Moreover, prolonged depression is associated with the eventual shrinkage of the hippocampus, the region of the brain associated with emotion, memory, and learning.

This doesn't mean that the degeneration of the hippocampus is permanent. Thankfully, the hippocampus is capable of growing new neurons and forming new neural connections. The brain's amazing ability to produce new neurons and form new connections is called neuroplasticity, and this process is called neural regeneration. And this is where antidepressants come in. Antidepressants have the ability to stimulate neural regeneration -- and so does CBD.

Circumstantial evidence and clinical trials on rodents have shown that CBD not only protects the hippocampus, it also helps this brain area regenerate neurons and prevent its shrinkage.  There are ongoing clinical trials examining the effect of CBD on anxiety and depression so this will be an exciting time for advocates of CBD oil as a treatment for mood disorders.

CBD Oil For Pain Relief

If you're one of the millions of people suffering from musculoskeletal diseases, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, or migraine, then you might find CBD oil useful for alleviating chronic pain. Chronic pain is often treated with over-the-counter medicines and prescription medication. But apart from their adverse effects, a number of chronic pain sufferers find that over-the-counter and prescriptions medications can often make them dependent and this is something they want to avoid.

CBD oil is one of the non-traditional substitutes being explored right now by people suffering from chronic pain. So how does it work? Although studies are still being conducted as to how the compound influences the endocannabinoid system, there is evidence that this compound imitates and augments the effects of the endocannabinoid anandamide (also called the "bliss" molecule).

Cannabidiol for pain relief has shown some promise in treating osteoarthritis as shown in a study published in the journal Pain (2017), as well as in reducing pain and inflammation as shown in the European Journal of Pain (2016). It has also proven to reduce the pain when applied directly on the skin of a person suffering from a rare skin condition called epidermolysis bullosa as shown in a study published in the journal Pediatric Dermatology (2018).

CBD Oil For Insomnia

Insomnia is a sleep disorder that can interfere with your productivity and quality of life. Sleep disorders are more common than originally thought, and today around 60 million Americans suffer from one form of sleep disorder. But those who are sleep-deprived might find that much-needed shut-eye with the help of CBD oil.

Thanks to its high THC content, cannabis has long been used to induce relaxation and sleep. But CBD oil is a great alternative for people who don't want the "high" and other negative effects of THC (not to mention the question of its legality). CBD oil has been proven to induce rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, as well as improve alertness during the day

CBD Oil For Alzheimer's

CBD oil has shown some promise in managing the behavioral symptoms related to Alzheimer's disease and other dementia-related conditions, such as vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, and Pick's disease.

But how does cannabidiol help manage the symptoms of these neurodegenerative diseases? One theory suggests that cannabidiol can help reduce inflammation and counter the effects of oxygen stress when foreign cells (such as bacteria or viruses) invades the central nervous system. Cannabidiol also serves as a neuroprotectant and even helps regenerate brain cells. Keep in mind, however, that CBD oil does not prevent dementia and only helps manage the behavioral symptoms of these types of diseases.

CBD Oil For Diabetes

Diabetes is a disease marked by the abnormally high presence of glucose in the blood. This disease stems from the body's inability to produce a hormone called insulin or even respond well to it. Because of this abnormality, glucose lingers in the blood and urine and does not reach the body's cells. Complications, such as cardiovascular diseases, renal diseases, eye diseases, and even mental illness, can make diabetes more dangerous.

While CBD oil does not cure diabetes or lower your blood sugar, it can help control and alleviate the symptoms associated with this disease. For example, CBD can help reduce the pain, numbness, or tingling felt by people suffering from diabetic neuropathy. It also has potent anti-inflammatory properties and can act as an antispasmodic agent.

Additionally, CBD can help deal with obesity and facilitate weight loss. THC, the compound which gives marijuana its famous euphoric effects, increases appetite. But CBD has been known as a weight loss aid thanks to its appetite suppressant properties. It also serves as a potent anti-inflammatory, as well as aides in weight loss by transforming white fat (white adipose tissue) into brown fat (brown adipose tissue).

CBD Oil For H]eart Disease

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, cardiovascular disease is the number one leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States.

Apart from a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle, cannabidiol has also shown some promise in preventing some cardiovascular diseases. CBD oil has been proven to lower blood pressure related to stress and anxiety, and even reduce blood pressure during rest.

It has anti-inflammatory properties and has shown promise in reducing the likelihood of autoimmune myocarditis. Additionally, CBD showed some potential in helping patients who had stroke because of its neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory properties.

CBD Oil For Cancer

Cancer is a disease which stems from the uncontrolled growth and spread of anomalous cells in the body. Currently, it is the second leading cause of death in the United States. The medical world has made great strides in treating cancer patients and prolonging their lives, but pain and discomfort are still something patients need to live with -- and this is where CBD comes in.

Most experiments regarding the effectivity of cannabidiol in treating cancer and its symptoms have been conducted in the lab and administered using rodent models.

These studies have established that cannabidiol is effective in controlling nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy treatment. Apart from preventing neuropathy caused by chemotherapy, CBD has also reduced anxiety and improved sleep in rodents with cancer.
