Frequently Asked CBD Questsions

1) What is CBD oil, and where does it come from?

Cannabidiol (or CBD) is one of the phytocannabinoids found in cannabis plants. The controversial marijuana plant is a great source of cannabidiol and other phytocannabinoids. But today, the primary source of commercial CBD is the industrial hemp plant, the amazingly versatile and CBD-rich variety of Cannabis sativa plant.

Since CBD comes from the cannabis plant, perhaps you're wondering if it is also psychotropic. The answer is no, you won't get "high" when you take CBD-based products because they only have trace amounts of THC, the cannabinoid compound found in the marijuana plant which gives it its euphoric effects.

2) What are the benefits of CBD oil?

CBD's popularity has skyrocketed over the past few years thanks to its therapeutic effects. An oral CBD solution has been approved to be used as a treatment for Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, two rare types of pediatric epilepsy. It is an effective pain reliever, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotectant, and antioxidant. In recent years, CBD has shown promise in treating insomnia, chronic pain, PMS, PTSD, depression, and certain types of anxiety disorders.

Many people have found that it is effective in alleviating pain and other symptoms caused by diabetes and chemotherapy. CBD oil has made its way into face serums, night creams, lotions, salves, eye serums, and other skin care products. Cannabidiol is even mixed into dietary supplements, treats, and tinctures for dogs and cats.

3) Is CBD safe?

Since it is not psychotropic and non-addictive, CBD is 100% safe. But keep in mind that apart from Epidiolex (the oral cannabidiol solution created to treat Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome), CBD products are yet to be regulated or tested by the U.S. FDA. Some products have less CBD than actually stated on their labels, while others are sometimes sourced from farms where pesticides and herbicides are used.

Buying CBD-based products right now is always a gamble, and the onus falls to the consumers to ensure that the product contains the correct amount of CBD, is farmed following strict standards, and is free from harmful contaminants. Before buying any CBD products, make sure that they have been tested by accredited third-party laboratories to ensure that they are safe and effective.

4) What are the best ways to take CBD?

There are several ways to take CBD. One of the ways to take CBD in by inhaling it using a vape pen. Vaping is one of the fastest ways CBD is absorbed into the bloodstream, resulting in faster relief from pain and alleviation of other symptoms. CBD supplements also come in soft gel capsule formats that can be ingested easily. CBD oil can be mixed in baked goods, or turned into candies or gums. Although it is effective, the absorption of CBD into the system via ingestion is considerably slower compared to inhalation.

CBD oil is also available as a tincture or lozenge that can be taken through sublingual delivery (placed underneath the tongue). This compound is also mixed in creams, serums, and salves, and applied directly onto the skin to treat specific conditions or used as an instant pain reliever.

5) How much CBD should I take?

CBD product manufacturers usually have a dosing chart in their websites and instructions on the packaging itself to guide you through the process. But if you're taking a tincture or mixing it in baked goods, there are four things you should consider: your body weight,  the condition of your health, the product's CBD concentration, and your body chemistry. It is recommended that you consume 1 to 6mg of cannabidiol for every 10lbs of your body weight. Begin with a small dosage, and increase it if your body reacts positively to CBD.

The standard dosing rule is different for pets. If you want to give your dog or cat a dose of CBD, then remember to keep it at 0.25mg to 0.5mg per pound of your pet's body weight.

Talk to your physician before taking CBD products.

6) How much does CBD oil cost?

Products with cannabidiol are not exactly cheap. Some of the reasons why CBD oil products are expensive include:

* The cost of growing industrial hemp. The cost becomes higher when the plants are grown following organic standards.

* The type of extraction method. CBD oil extracted using CO2 method is more expensive because the resulting product is purer and more potent.

* The concentration of CBD.

* If other phytocannabinoids are present in the solution (full spectrum).

* Type of packaging.

* Third party testing.

* Company marketing.

7) Is CBD legal?

With the passage of the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937, possession of marijuana, hemp, and other types of cannabis plants became illegal. Cannabis became a Schedule 1 drug in the late 1960s, placing all hemp and other cannabis plants under official interdict. Years of research showed that hemp has low concentrations of THC, but these were not enough to have it reclassified.

It was not until the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill that hemp was finally reclassified and removed from the Controlled Substances Act.

Epidiolex, the groundbreaking CBD medication being used to treat two rare types of pediatric epilepsy, was approved by the U.S. FDA on June 25, 2018, as a Schedule V substance. But does that mean that all other CBD-based products are now legal? The answer can be quite confusing.

Cannabis and all cannabis-based products (with the exception of Epidiolex) are still considered Schedule I by the federal government. But the rules become more confusing when you zoom in on the state level. Currently, Idaho, Nebraska, and South Dakota are the only states where cannabis and any forms of cannabis products are considered illegal.

There are only a few states where all cannabis-based products (and this includes CBD oil) are considered legal, while in other states only medical marijuana is legal. Other states, on the other hand, have decreed that only products which contain high concentration of CBD and negligible amounts of THC are considered legal.

Furthermore, if you live in these states, you can only purchase them for treatment of certain conditions.

8) Where can I get CBD oil?

In states where cannabis and cannabis-based products are legal, consumers can buy CBD oil products from dispensaries or order them from online stores.

9) Is CBD oil addictive?

No, products that contain CBD oil are not addictive nor psychoactive. Ethical CBD manufacturers take steps to ensure that their products contain negligible amounts of THC (less than 0.03%).

10) What's the difference between CBD from marijuana and CBD from hemp?

Marijuana and hemp are both sources of CBD. Hemp, however, contains a low concentration of CBD, so you'll need a large amount of hemp to extract even a small amount of CBD. Hemp also has a low concentration of THC, the compound which gives cannabis its intoxicating effects.

This plant is a bio-accumulator so it absorbs anything -- including chemicals and other toxins -- that are in the soil where it is growing. Marijuana, on the other hand, is rich in both CBD and THC.
